Description

The Old Cross Keys Public House is a two-storey building with a prominent frontage featuring twin three-storey gables. The exterior is constructed with rubble cills and has modern tiled roofs. It has a tall parapet with a low stack on the rebuilt right gable end and a second stack on the left. The building showcases two and three-light moulded timber mullioned windows, which have overall dentilled lintels, leaded glazing, and moulded cills. A lean-to hood covers the doorway located between the gables. There are flat-roofed extensions designed in a similar style, with two doorways positioned at the angle facing Princess Way.

At the rear, there is a two-storey and attic gabled wing that retains medieval freestone lancets. This includes a single lancet with a chamfered surround in the attic, a cusped pair on the first floor, and a cusped single light on the ground floor. A further flat-roofed extension is located beyond this wing.

Inside, the pub retains chamfered timber beams and chamfered uprights in the bar area. Some elements of the early roof structure are still present, including two early hall trusses of the false arch-base type, with principal rafters that are shouldered at the center to support a soffit in a continuous curve, featuring scalloped decoration towards the wall heads. Two similar but simpler trusses can be found in the rear wing. Additionally, there are remains of a stone chimney-piece and other features.
