Description

The Shakespeare Centre Grammar School, formerly known as the Old Grammar School, is a single-storey rectangular building constructed from coursed rubble, featuring stone quoins and dressings. The roof is made of stone slate with coped gable ends and moulded stone stacks. Each side of the building has three large rectangular transomed windows, each with three lights, stone mullions, and moulded stone surrounds and cills. The south-facing windows have hood moulds above them. There are relieving arches with keystones above the windows, and brick relieving arches on the north side. The entrance door has a moulded stone surround and hood, with a stone tablet above it framed in moulding, inscribed in Hebrew, Greek, and Latin. Two modern windows have been inserted into the gable end. The building features a stone-capped plinth and a band of dressed stone along its length, inscribed with "Schola Latina Graeca Hebraica AD 1584". The date stone 1584 is located on the west gable, while another stone on the south elevation is inscribed "Rejecta AD 1723". Inside, there is an open timber wing post roof with seven bays. A new doorway was inserted on the south-east side in the summer of 1969, with a commemorative plaque above it.
