Description
The Oakham War Memorial is located in the churchyard to the south of the Church of All Saints, which is listed as Grade I. This memorial, designed in a medieval style, is made of Clipsham stone, donated by J Davenport-Handley of Clipsham Hall. It stands approximately 4.5 meters tall and features an octagonal cross shaft topped with an ornate lantern that includes carvings depicting the crucifixion, Madonna and child, St Martin dividing his cloak, and St George and the Dragon. The shaft is supported by a two-stage pedestal, which sits on a three-stepped, octagonal base crafted by Mr Draycott of Messrs Draycott and Stimson from Oakham.
The upper stage of the pedestal consists of a square block with prominent clasping buttresses at each corner and a relief-carved wreath on the west and east faces. The principal dedicatory inscription on the west face reads "TO THE MEN OF OAKHAM WHO GAVE THEIR LIVES IN THE GREAT WAR." The inscription "AD 1914 - 1919" is carved within the wreath on the east face. Additionally, the names of 17 men who fell in the Second World War are inscribed on the north and south faces of the upper stage. The octagonal lower stage lists the names of 111 men and one woman who were killed in the First World War. A book by Mr G Phillips, containing the names and biographies of the fallen along with their photographs, was placed in a sealed leaden casket within the center of the memorial.
