Description

College House, located on Church Street, is a former vicarage that now serves as a sanatorium. The building dates back to around 1330, with alterations made in the 17th and 18th centuries, and some modernisation in the 20th century. It is a sprawling two-storey structure built from coursed stone, with a stone slate roof and rusticated quoins. The central gable features one window, with two windows on each side, all with flat wood lintels and hung sashes, showcasing 18th-century fenestration. There has been considerable modern restoration to the building.

Inside, the property boasts a very rare and well-preserved medieval roof structure, which has been dendro-dated to between 1319 and 1339. This roof features four crown posts, each with side braces that support a central beam. The collars hold pairs of rafters, each linked with supporting braces. This unusual roof structure remains largely intact and unaltered, although it does include some modern strengthening timbers. The building is listed at a high grade due to the significance of its surviving medieval roof structure.
