Description

The gates, wall, and railings at Barcroft Junior School were built in 1896 by architects Croft and Bentley from Grimsby, with Henry Marrows as the builder, for the Cleethorpes School Board. The structure features a wall made of red brick in Flemish bond with sandstone ashlar dressings and wrought iron railings. There are pairs of double gates leading to the former Girls' School on the left and the former Infants' School on the right, both flanked by walls and railings that include gateways at each end. The square-section piers have ashlar bands for the upper hinge mounts, moulded ashlar cornices, and coping with semi-circular faces on each side. The main entrances feature double gates with dog bars and ornate Arts and Crafts-style scrolled designs, along with single rear buttress walls on the left piers that have scrolled bars, finials, and octagonal principals topped with ball finials. There are half-height walls on the left and right with moulded ashlar coping (with a concrete replacement on the left) and railings that include plain bars and panels adorned with scrolled lyre motifs, some supported by raking struts to the rear buttresses. The left side has double board gates, while the right side features a 20th-century steel gate.
