Description
The playground walls, gates, and railings surrounding Scarcroft County Primary School were built in 1896, with some later alterations, by architect W.H. Brierley. The walls are constructed of red or brown brick in various patterns, topped with coping made of glazed brown brick or stone. The gateways and gate piers are made of stone or brick, banded with stone. The gates and railings are made of cast iron, with the carriage gate piers made of wrought iron. The pupil gateways feature shallow gabled flat copings and segment-arched openings, while other gate piers have moulded bases and caps. The railings and gate bars are square in section and topped with pointed finials, and the carriage gates are set between openwork panel piers decorated with scrolls, arabesques, and rinceaux.
