Description
The gate piers, gate, wall, and railings to the north of Hough Lane Centre in Bramley were built in 1877 by R.L. Adams, the architect for the Leeds School Board. This structure features a pair of carved stone gate piers that stand approximately 2.5 meters high. The railings extend about 3 meters along the roadside and turn the corner to enclose the northeast side of the school. The gate piers have a high plinth and a shaft decorated with attached columns at the corners, a band of roundels, and a gabled capstone with cusped recessed panels and a moulded top. The gate and railings are made of cast iron and are set on a low ashlar wall with chamfered coping. The railings include rods with bulbous finials and scrolled finials on the gate, along with a thickened corner standard topped with a moulded bud finial. Although the railings are not complete, they exemplify the high quality of design and craftsmanship typical of this Board School. This structure is included for its group value.
