Description

The Church of St Peter is an Anglican church dating from 1861, with alterations made in the 20th century. It was designed by Perkins and Backhouse in the Gothic Revival style. The church is constructed of coursed squared stone and ashlar, with a blue slate roof. A fine, three-stage northwest corner tower with a spire is a prominent feature, surviving from an earlier structure following extensive rebuilding of the nave, chancel and other areas. The tower includes angle buttresses, blind arcading to the base, a second stage with three decorated cusped recesses containing attached columns, and a cusped lancet window. Above this is a round window, a triple belfry window, a trefoil pierced parapet, corner pinnacles, and gables over a clock face at the base of a tall stone spire. Two-light traceried windows with hoodmoulds and buttresses are visible on the former northwest wall of the nave. The interior has been largely replaced, but incorporates two windows by William Morris, which were re-set in 1874.
