Description
The railings and gate piers at Chapel Allerton Primary School were built in 1878 by Richard Adams, the School Board architect. They consist of a brick wall with stone copings, stone piers, and wrought-iron railings and gates, enclosing the playgrounds. The overall length is approximately 260 meters on the east, south, and west sides of the school grounds, with an additional 50 meters dividing the playground area. The gate piers stand about 3.5 meters tall with a square section, deep plinth, chamfered shaft, and large gabled capstones featuring cusped recesses. There are two pairs of gates with close-set bars and scroll decoration, while the railings have alternating ball and trefoil finials. The west side, facing Methley Terrace, has been extensively altered due to the school's extension and the creation of new access. The interior has not been inspected. This structure is included for its group value.
