Description
The British Legion Club is a working men's club, likely a branch of the Ancient Order of Foresters, dated 1876 on a shield in the gable. It has been altered over time and is constructed from coursed rock-faced sandstone rubble with quoins, though the roof, likely slate, is not visible. The building has a rectangular plan that runs at right angles to the street and stands two and a half storeys tall over cellars.
The facade features a gabled design with three windows, raised quoins at the corners, a band across the gable, and gable coping that steps over the band, complete with kneelers and an apex finial. The ground floor includes a tall round-headed doorway in the center, surrounded by a chamfered surround and topped with a stag's head on the keystone, along with an elaborate corniced entablature that features a horizontal bow-and-arrow flanked by ball-finials. There is another tall doorway near the right-hand corner with a plain stone surround and a rectangular overlight, as well as two large two-light mullioned windows with chamfered stone surrounds, shouldered lights, and altered glazing.
On the first floor, there are three similar windows. The gable displays two pairs of blind round-headed lights with keystones, flanking a stone shield with lettering that is now mostly illegible except for "est 1876," and a blind keyed oculus above the band. The interior has not been inspected. Historically, the Foresters were the second largest of the many friendly societies that thrived in Lancashire during the 19th century, and this building is noted as a good example of its type.
