Description

St Peter's Church of England Infants and Junior School (West range) is a school built in the late 19th century and has undergone alterations. It is constructed of snecked sandstone rubble with a slate roof and features a rectangular plan with extensions at both ends, designed in the Gothic style. The main range consists of a single storey over a basement, taking advantage of the slope down to the River Brun. The south-facing front has a four-bay architectural design, including an open-arcaded basement play area supported by buttresses and double-chamfered segmental-pointed arches. The main floor features 6-light mullion-and-transom windows with hood-moulds and figured stops, topped by a steeply-pitched roof with coped gables and a gable chimney at the east end.

At the east end, there is a ramped approach leading to a 20th-century entrance on the side of the east extension. The rear of the main range has four windows similar to those at the front. The east extension, which faces the churchyard, consists of two unequal bays. The left bay includes a gabled porch with a blocked segmental-headed doorway and a side window beneath a hood-mould, along with a crow-stepped gable featuring a sunk plaque carved with the keys of St Peter. The right bay is gabled and has a large canted mullion-and-transom bay window. Lower additions at the south-east corner now connect this building with the East Range. The interior has not been inspected.
