Description

Woodtop Primary School is a Church of England school built in 1873, with some alterations. It features snecked sandstone rubble and slate roofs adorned with pierced crested ridge tiles, although some are damaged. The building is designed in a Gothic style with steeply-pitched roofs and has an H-plan layout with a rear wing.

The exterior is single storey and has a 1:3:1 window arrangement. The main section includes a gabled porch on the right side, which has a two-centred arched doorway surrounded by a segmental-pointed chamfered surround and a hood-mould. Above the doorway is a banner with raised lettering that reads "INFANTS." There are three two-light windows with cusped lights and a skylight on the front slope of the roof.

The left wing features a re-entrant with a two-centred arched doorway that has a recessed door and a hood-mould with deep returned ends and carved stops. Both wings have large two-centred arched windows; the left wing has a window with four arched lights featuring circular and multifoil tracery, while the right wing has a window with three cusped lights and three quatrefoils in the head. The right-hand return wall of this wing has a gabled centre with a two-centred arched two-light window, additional windows similar to those in the main range, and a chimney at the rear gable. The rear of the building is designed in a similar but simpler style.

The interior has not been inspected. The forecourt is enclosed by a low wall made of sandstone rubble with chamfered coping, topped with bar railings that include dog-bars. There are a pair of square gate piers opposite the porch, which support cast-iron gates and an elliptical overthrow featuring a square lamp holder at the apex.
