Description
Belle Vue Mill is a cotton weaving mill with an attached warehouse, built in 1863 for William Richmond. It is currently used for alternative commercial purposes. The structure is made of roughly squared coursed millstone grit rubble and has slate roofs. The warehouse has two storeys and a basement, with weaving sheds located to the south, which are enclosed by a perimeter wall.
The warehouse features an 11-bay Westgate elevation that follows the gentle curve of the street. Between bays 7 and 8, there is a tall, separately coped and gabled transverse wall with no visible masonry joint from the roadside. The street entrance next to this wall has a simply chamfered surround. The upper floors have 2-light, 6-paned windows, while the basement windows are either boarded or fitted with grilles. The east end wall has an enlarged vehicle entrance beneath an advertisement hoarding. The rear elevation has 12 bays with similar window arrangements as the front. The weaving sheds appear to be intact, although they were not inspected.
Attached to the south-west corner is a square wing with two low storeys and three windows on the west side, topped with a pyramidal roof. The chimney stack and engine house have been demolished. Inside the warehouse, there are chamfered ceiling beams on the ground floor.
