Description
Burnley House is a terrace of three town houses, now functioning as a residential nursing home. It was built in the early to mid-19th century and has been altered over time. The structure is made of sandstone ashlar with a slate roof that is hipped at the right-hand end. Each house has a double-depth plan and is double-fronted, with a set-back receding wing at the right-hand end. The building has two storeys over cellars and originally featured a symmetrical design with three windows for each house. The facade includes raised rusticated quoins and a moulded gutter cornice.
Each house has a symmetrical facade with a large central doorway, which is framed by an Ionic architrave with engaged columns, a plain frieze, and a moulded cornice. The recessed panelled door has a plain overlight, although No.43 to the left is now missing the cornice. No.41 has an enlarged window to the left at ground floor, while the other windows are vertical-rectangular with raised sills and plain surrounds, all of which have altered glazing.
The building features a coped gable and gable chimney on No.43, as well as a ridge chimney at the junction of Nos. 41 and 43, both of which are corniced. There are two other ridge chimneys that have been cut down. The left gable wall is made of watershot masonry and has four windows at ground floor and one above. It also has an unusual horizontal gutter supported by a corbel-table at eaves level, likely designed to direct rainwater from the front gutter to a downspout at the rear. The receding wing at the right-hand end is single-storey and styled similarly to the front. There are 20th-century extensions at the rear. The interiors have not been inspected.
