Description
Belle Vue Terrace is a row of five small town houses built in the early to mid-19th century. Numbers 106 to 112 were constructed before 1827, with the remaining house (number 114) added subsequently. The buildings are located in Burnley and are constructed of coursed squared sandstone, with number 106 being rendered. They have slate roofs. The layout is of a rectangular double-depth plan, each house single-fronted except number 114, which is double-fronted at the right-hand end. There are 2+2+2+2+3 windows across the terrace. The buildings feature moulded gutter cornices. Doorways are located to the left, except at number 114, which has a symmetrical facade with a moulded architrave, plain frieze, and moulded cornice, along with recessed panelled doors (at numbers 108, 110, and 114). The other doorways have been altered. The windows are vertical-rectangular, with raised sills and plain surrounds. Number 114 has four-pane sashes in the lower-left and upper-right windows; all the other windows have altered glazing. Coped gables and three ridge chimneys—all cut down—are present, along with a gable chimney on the left at number 114. The right-hand return wall of number 114 has two ground-floor windows, three at the first floor, and one attic window. The rear of the terrace includes a round-headed stair-window and a small back extension to number 106. The interior has not been inspected. Historically, the houses were occupied by business and professional families, and by the 1880s, the cellars were leased as separate dwellings. Belle Vue Terrace is a good example of late Georgian lower-middle-class town houses and forms a group with Belle Vue Mill to the left, at the junction with Trafalgar Street.
