Description

The railway bridge, built between 1847 and 1848 for the East Lancashire Railway Company, spans a public road and is located approximately 100 meters west of the British Railways Viaduct. Constructed from coursed rock-faced sandstone with freestone dressings, the bridge features a wide segmental-headed arch that is slightly skewed. This arch is adorned with stepped rusticated voussoirs and imposts that are carried through, flanked by broad piers. Additional architectural details include a plain frieze, a chamfered cornice, a coped parapet, and sloped concave abutments. The bridge is part of a group with the nearby viaduct on Ashfield Road.
