Description

The British Railways Viaduct is a railway viaduct built between 1847 and 1848 for the East Lancashire Railway Company. It is constructed from coursed rock-faced sandstone blocks with freestone dressings and red brick soffits to the arches. The viaduct runs in a straight line for approximately 400 meters and features 15 semicircular arches with rusticated voussoirs. These arches are supported by slightly battered piers that have plain impost bands around them, along with a continuous chamfered cornice and low coped parapets, which are partially damaged. The viaduct is a prominent and striking feature in the urban landscape, blocking the view to the north-east from the town center. It is part of a group with the Clifton Street railway bridge located about 100 meters to the west.
