Description
The Former Plane Tree Public House is a building that was remodeled as a public house between 1895 and 1897 by Charles Parsons. It is constructed of sandstone ashlar on the sides and rear, with random rubble, and has a concealed roof that is likely slate. The building is designed in the Jacobean style and has a rectangular double-depth plan.
It stands three storeys tall and features four unequal bays. Architectural details include a chamfered plinth, string courses, pilasters, and wall-shafts on the upper floors, along with a panelled parapet adorned with ball finials. The second and fourth bays have shaped upstands, both flanked by obelisk finials, with the left upstand displaying raised lettering that reads "PLANE TREE."
The ground floor features a round-headed doorway in the second bay, which is framed by an architrave with Mannerist Ionic pilasters and a strap-work parapet topped with obelisk finials. There are mullion-and-transom windows with eight lights to the left, six lights to the right, and a bowed eight-light window in the fourth bay. On the upper floors, the second and fourth bays have coupled windows with Ionic colonnettes and are flanked by pilasters, while the first bay has two windows and the third bay has one window. All of these upper-floor windows have been replaced with 20th-century top-hung casements featuring applied diamond lattice leading.
The interior of the building has been altered. Historically, before its remodeling in 1895, it was a private house occupied by William Hopwood, a cotton spinner and manufacturer, who was one of Burnley's wealthiest individuals.
