Description

The Sanctuary Rock Bar, formerly known as Thwackums, is a building that likely served as a warehouse or part of a former cotton mill before becoming a restaurant and bar. It dates from the early to mid 19th century and has been altered and recently restored. The structure is made of coursed squared sandstone and features a composition tile roof with a rectangular plan.

The building stands three storeys tall and has four windows, along with a loading bay on the left side. The left corner is accented with rusticated quoins that rise to about two-thirds of the height, appearing as if they belong to another building that was once attached. Next to this corner are three vertically aligned doorways; the ground floor doorway has an altered plain surround, while the upper doorways feature convex moulded surrounds. To the right, there are three ground floor windows and an inserted or altered doorway at the right-hand end. The upper floors have four windows each, with chisel-dressed sills and lintels, and 20th-century six-pane glazing.

The interior has not been inspected. The Sanctuary Rock Bar forms a group with the former Empire Theatre (now Coral Bingo on St James Street) to the left and rear, as well as with Free Trade Street to the south, which is located behind Nos 31-47 Hammerton Street.
