Description

Shifters is a house built in 1850, which was altered to become a public house in 1869 and has recently been refurbished. It features watershot coursed sandstone and a hipped slate roof. The building has a shallow rectangular plan located on a corner site, with a splayed corner facing Hargreaves Street. It stands three storeys high over cellars and has a window arrangement of 1:4:1, with the first window located in the splayed corner. There is a moulded gutter cornice along the top.

The narrow splayed corner includes a doorway with a plain surround and moulded cornice, leading to a fixed door with a plain overlight. On the ground floor, both the return wall to Hargreaves Street and the main facade to Hammerton Street feature a large square window with a restored wooden pilastered architrave and cornice. The window to the right is multi-paned, while the left window has restored plate-glass etched with a large foliated pattern and the lettering "BMB" in monogram, with "NEW WHITE HORSE" below it. The main facade also has a similar doorway in the third bay and a plain doorway in the end bay, which serves as the current main entrance. Both facades have 12-pane sashed windows with raised sills and plain surrounds. A ridge chimney is present on the roof.

The interior has been altered. Shifters forms a group with Nos 12 and 14 on the opposite corner and with Nos 9-29 on the opposite side of the street.
