Description

Nos. 35, 37, and 39A on George Street is a former cotton manufacturers' warehouse, now used for restaurants and other purposes. It was likely built in the 1840s and has been altered since then. The building is constructed of sandstone ashlar, with the rear made of red brick in Flemish bond, and the roof is not visible. It has a rectangular plan that runs parallel to the street, with loading access at the rear.

The structure features a basement and three storeys, arranged in a nine-window range. The basement and ground floor are rusticated, with alternating punch-dressed blocks, and there is a deep cornice with modillions and a parapet above. The basement and ground floor create a nine-bay "arcade" of square-headed openings between narrow rusticated piers, topped with a continuous lintel that is dressed as voussoirs over the openings. The third and sixth bays contain doorways, while the other bays are divided almost equally by linked sills, although the glazing in the windows has been altered.

On the first floor, there are segmental-headed sash windows with keystones and small ornamental iron balconies. The second floor features round-headed sashes with linked imposts, raised sills, and moulded heads with keystones. At the rear, there are small gables over the outer bays connected by a parapet over the centre, with sash windows that have flat-arched heads, and various large inserted metal extractor ducts. The interior has not been inspected. This building is an early example of its type in Manchester.
