Description

No. 16 Nicholas Street is a warehouse built around 1870 by Alfred Waterhouse, now used for shops and offices. The building features sandstone ashlar and red brick with sandstone dressings, topped with a slate roof. It has a rectangular plan that includes an integral loading bay at the rear and is designed in a Free Elizabethan style.

The structure stands five storeys tall with an attic and a basement, displaying a symmetrical arrangement of windows in a 2:6:2 pattern. The ends of the building are accentuated by steeply-pitched gables that project slightly. The basement and ground floor are finished in ashlar, while the upper floors have quoined corners and window surrounds, with sill-bands on each level, a bracketed cornice, and gable copings with kneelers, along with a parapet between the gables.

The ground floor features a central round-headed doorway, which is moulded in three orders and has a pilastered and pitched surround. This is flanked by coupled round-headed windows with linked hoodmoulds. The first and second floors have segmental-headed windows, while the third and fourth floors include square-headed windows, with the upper ones also being shouldered. The gables contain coupled segmental-headed windows, all of which are sashed without glazing bars. Above the parapet, there are three flat-roofed three-light dormers. The side walls of the building are similar, with five bays.
