Description

Nos. 70 and 72 Portland Street is a manufacturers' warehouse built in 1873 by Pennington and Bridgen, now serving as a restaurant and offices. The building is constructed from sandstone ashlar with some marble dressings and features a square plan on a corner site with a rounded corner. It showcases an eclectic palazzo style with elaborate decoration and stands five storeys tall over a basement, comprising four bays plus the corner.

The façade includes channelled rustication up to the first floor, bands between the floors, a bracketed cornice, and a blocking course with some antefixae. The third bay has a round-headed doorway with run-out voussoirs, a mask keystone, and divided panelled doors. The basement has segmental-headed openings, while the ground floor features mullioned 2-light windows. All upper floors have 2-light windows, with those on the first floor having round-headed lights and very elaborate surrounds, including marble shafts, panelled aprons, carved spandrels, and shallow 2-centred-arched carved canopies. The second and fourth floors have square-headed windows, and the third floor has round-headed windows, with the second floor featuring shafts, enriched heads, and linked imposts, and the third floor having linked enriched arched bands over the heads.

There are single-light windows at the corner, with the first-floor window having a small semi-circular corbelled balcony. The right-hand return to Nicholas Street matches the style of the main façade. The building forms a group with Nos. 74 to 80 to the left, illustrating the historical development of this street through a striking contrast of scale and type. The interior has not been inspected.
