Description
Nos. 52 and 54 Portland Street are textile warehouses, now used as a restaurant and other purposes, likely built around 1860 to 1870 and altered since then. The buildings are constructed of red brick with sandstone dressings and feature a slate roof. They have a rectangular plan and exhibit a simplified palazzo style, standing five storeys tall over a basement with three wide bays.
The ground floor is divided into three distinct sections: on the left, there are tall coupled round-headed doorways, one of which has been altered into a window, featuring panelled spandrels and a cornice supported by elongated brackets with incised decoration. In the center, there are three narrow segmental-headed windows with pilastered surrounds and similarly decorated keystones, topped with a cornice. To the right, there are two narrow segmental-headed windows and a doorway with rusticated surrounds.
The upper floors have tripartite sashed windows. The first-floor windows have pilastered architraves, with the central window featuring incised decoration and a segmental pediment above it. The second-floor windows have panelled aprons and cornices arched over the center lights, while the windows on the upper floors are more simply designed, all being sashed without glazing bars. The rear and interior of the buildings were not inspected. These buildings are included for their group value.
