Description

Nos. 72 to 76 Newton Street are merchants' and manufacturers' warehouses, now used as offices, built around 1860 to 1880 with some alterations. The buildings are constructed of red brick in Flemish bond, featuring sandstone dressings and a hipped slate roof. They have a long rectangular plan that runs parallel to the street and are designed in a simplified palazzo style.

The structure consists of four storeys with a basement and includes 13 bays. Each floor has sill-bands, and there is a brick corbel table supported by stone brackets. Round-headed doorways are located at the 7th, 10th, and 13th bays, each framed by pilastered stone surrounds, keystones, panelled spandrels, and cornices on consoles, although the doorway on the right has been altered to a window. Large segmental-headed windows are found at the 1st, 8th, and 11th bays, while the remaining windows on the ground, 1st, and 2nd floors are coupled segmental-headed sashes set in square-headed recesses with stepped heads. The 3rd floor features coupled round-headed sashed windows with stone hoodmoulds and linking impost bands. The basement windows are shouldered. The right-hand return has 7 bays in a similar style, but with single-light windows on all floors. The interior has not been inspected.
