Description
The former Rochdale Canal Warehouse, now used as workshops and stores, was built in 1836, as indicated on the south parapet. The building is constructed of brown brick with some sandstone dressings and has a long rectangular shape oriented on an east-west axis. It stands six storeys tall and features a 13-window south facade. The facade includes coupled semi-circular shipping holes in the 7th to 9th bays, which have raised keystones. There are small round-headed windows on all floors, although the windows at the first floor above the shipping holes are blocked, and those to the right have been altered. Most of the second-floor windows have been replaced with horizontal-rectangular windows, except for three above the shipping holes. The parapet has a flat coping and a rectangular upstand over the shipping holes, which is lettered "1836." The gable walls have four windows and full-height round-headed multi-stage loading slots, with similar windows (some altered) and copings featuring wide kneelers. The rear of the building has three similar loading slots, two of which still have semicircular canopies for crane gear, along with similar windows.
