Description

This building consists of a pair of small town houses, now functioning as a shop and café. They were built in the late 18th century and have been altered and reduced over time. The houses are constructed of brown brick in Flemish bond, with some sandstone dressings, and feature a slate roof. Each house has a double-depth plan and is single-fronted. They are currently two storeys high, but were originally three storeys with basements.

The façade includes two sets of two windows. The basement windows have segmental heads, and there are original steps and railings leading up to the doorways on the right, which are accessed by three steps and have moulded architraves and pediments. At the ground floor, the segmental-headed windows include a four-pane sash window at No. 47 with an exposed box, while the other windows have been altered. The first floor features segmental-headed 16-pane sash windows with exposed boxes, except for the right window at No. 47, which has altered glazing. All windows are now fitted with louvred pseudo shutters.

The top two courses of the wall have been rebuilt. Although the interior was not inspected, it has been reported by the Manchester Early Dwellings Research Group that there is no internal communication to the basements, indicating they were likely used as workshops or cellar dwellings. This building is a very rare survival of its type.
