Description

MANCHESTER

SJ8498SE HILTON STREET 698-1/29/164 (East side) Nos.45, 47, 47A

GV II

Pair of small town houses, now shop and cafe. Late C18, altered and reduced. Brown brick in Flemish bond, with some sandstone dressings, slate roof. Double-depth plan, each house single-fronted. Now 2 storeys but formerly 3 storeys, with basements, 2+2 windows; segmental-headed basement windows, original steps and railings; doorways to the right, up 3 steps, with moulded architraves and pediments; segmental-headed windows at ground floor, that to No.47 a 4-pane sash with exposed box (other altered); segmental-headed 16-pane sashed windows with exposed boxes at 1st floor (except that to the right at No.47 which has altered glazing); all these windows now furnished with louvred pseudo shutters. Top 2 courses of wall rebuilt. Interior not inspected, but reported by Manchester Early Dwellings Research Group to be without internal communication to basements, which were therefore either workshops or cellar dwellings. Very rare survival of this type.
