Description

Numbers 4, 6, and 8 are three small dwellings built in the late 18th century, arranged in two pairs and one single block, connected by screen walls. They are located at the back of Nos 69-73 Lever Street and may have originally served as service wings for those properties. The buildings are constructed from orange-red brick in English garden wall bond and feature mono-pitched roofs covered with graduated slate. Each block is rectangular and positioned at right angles to Bradley Street, with one cottage facing the street and another facing the yard behind. They are two storeys high, with each block having one window on the first floor. The doorways are simple, with wooden surrounds and board doors, although the doorway for No. 4 is now blocked. There is one segmental-headed window at ground level, with No. 6 also blocked and the others boarded up. The first-floor windows are damaged and consist of three, two, and three lights. High screen walls separate the blocks and include doorways leading to the yards, although the doorways for Nos 4 and 8 were blocked at the time of the survey. These buildings are a rare survival in the city centre and were part of the original development of the site between 1787 and 1794 by Charles Bradley, who also constructed Nos 69-73 Lever Street.
