Description

The City Public House is a former public house, originally known as The Prince of Orange, located on Oldham Street in Manchester. It was likely built in the late 18th century and underwent alterations around 1870. The building features a narrow rectangular plan oriented at right angles to the street and stands three storeys tall with two windows on the front.

The ground floor has an impressive inn front that includes pilasters with scrolled capitals, carved floral panels, a round-headed doorway on the left, a round-headed window on the right, and an arched rectangular window in the centre, all adorned with carved spandrels and fanlights with radiating glazing bars. Above this, there is a dentilled frieze and a painted fascia with large ball finials on the end brackets.

Each upper floor is decorated with a painted relief panel flanked by sash windows that do not have glazing bars. The first-floor panel illustrates the arrival of William and Mary, featuring Britannia curtseying and presenting a crown, alongside two helmeted women, a parson with raised arms, and an angel with a trumpet. The second-floor panel displays the Royal Arms, featuring a lion and unicorn. A large panel between the floors is painted with the words "THE CITY," and the building is topped with a coped parapet. The interior has not been inspected.
