Description

The Crown and Kettle Public House is a public house located on Oldham Road in Ancoats, Manchester. It was likely built in the early 19th century and has undergone alterations since then. The building is constructed of buff brick with stone dressings and features a hipped slate roof. It has a square plan situated on a corner site and stands two storeys tall with five bays on each side.

The ground floor is notable for its very tall transomed two-light windows, which are adorned with Gothick tracery and linked hoodmoulds. There is a doorway centrally located on the Oldham Street facade, featuring a four-centred arched fanlight, along with similar doorways in the second and fifth bays of the Great Ancoats Street facade. The first floor has shorter two-light windows with cusped lights, also featuring linked hoodmoulds.

Inside, the public house has an unusual ceiling with very large Gothic pendents, and there is a small snug area with mahogany panelling, which is said to have come from the airship R.101. Historically, the building is said to have been used as a courtroom associated with a former market that was located nearby.
