Description
The Castle Hotel is a public house located on Oldham Street in Manchester. It was built in the early to mid 19th century, with alterations made around 1900. The building has a narrow rectangular plan that runs at right angles to the street and consists of three low storeys with three symmetrical windows. The ground floor features brown glazed terracotta, with pilasters framing a large central window and flanking doorways. Above this, there is a deep fascia displaying raised white lettering that reads "CASTLE HOTEL," supported by elaborate consoles beneath a moulded cornice. The first floor has three sash windows without glazing bars, while the second floor has two similar windows linked by a sill-band, all adorned with moulded architraves. The building is topped with a modillioned eaves cornice. Inside, it retains an unusual multicoloured glazed faience curved bar front, as reported on June 20, 1988.
