Description

116 and 118 Portland Street are warehouses, likely used for textiles or clothing, that date from around 1860 to 1880 and have been altered. The buildings are constructed of red brick with sandstone dressings and feature a slate roof. They have a rectangular plan and are designed in the Italian Renaissance style. The structure stands three storeys tall with a basement and attic, comprising six symmetrical bays. It has a plinth, a cornice at the ground floor, a sill-band at the second floor, and a prominent modillioned cornice. There are two small open-pedimented dormers and a central chimney stack.

The ground floor is arcaded with round-headed arches, supported by banded brick piers and moulded stone imposts. The outer bays have tall doorways with keystones and segmental pediments on brackets, while the windows feature keystones and original glazing in two round-headed lights, although some have been covered or altered. The first floor has segmental-headed windows, each set in a raised brick architrave with a stone cornice. The second floor features round-headed windows, recessed between pairs of short brick pilasters, and there are small round-headed dormer windows.

The rear and interior of the buildings were not inspected. They form part of a group with Nos 106 and 108-114 to the right and Nos 120 to 126 to the left.
