Description

Basil House is a manufacturers' home trade warehouse, now serving as a club and offices, built around 1870-1880. It is likely iron-framed and features red brick cladding, sandstone dressings, and a slate roof. The building has a rectangular plan with loading access at the rear and is designed in an eclectic style. It stands five storeys tall over a basement and consists of six bays.

The ground floor showcases stone banding and a bracketed cornice, with simple pilasters and some stone bands on the next three floors. A moulded sill-band marks the slightly set back top floor, which is adorned with a stepped frieze and cornice, as well as two panelled chimneys topped with segmental-pedimented caps.

The ground floor includes a segmental-headed doorway in the fourth bay, featuring a heavily enriched pilastered surround and a frieze with the attached lettering "BASIL HOUSE." The first bay has a former doorway that has been altered into a window with a similar surround, while a single-light window is positioned to the left. Coupled square-headed windows are found over cellar openings in the other bays. The first, second, and third floors have coupled windows with ornamented stone panels between them; the first-floor windows have cornices, while the third-floor windows are segmental-headed with keystones and impost bands. The top floor features smaller coupled windows and a single-light window to the left.

The interior has not been inspected. Basil House forms a group with No. 103 to the left and Nos. 109, 111, and 113 to 119 on the right, together creating a complete block of former warehouses.
