Description
No. 101 Princess Street is a shipping warehouse that was converted into flats and offices. It was built in 1869 by Clegg and Knowles and has been altered since its construction. The building is made of red brick in Flemish bond, with sandstone dressings, and features a parallelogram plan on an island site, including a rear loading bay. Designed in the Italian palazzo style, it stands five storeys tall over a basement and consists of nine bays.
The exterior includes a plinth with banded vermiculation and rusticated quoins at the corners. There is a cornice above the ground floor and sill-bands on all upper floors, with a prominent cornice supported by paired brackets. The first bay has a round-headed doorway with an enriched pilastered surround that includes a carved voluted keystone. The windows are segmental-headed across all floors, with the first-floor windows featuring stone architraves that have alternating cornices and pediments, while the other windows have keystones and slightly recessed brick reveals. The return sides of the building are similar in design. The interior has been remodelled. This building forms a group with No. 103 to the right and No. 101 Portland Street to the left.
