Description
This warehouse, now offices, was built in 1870 by Clegg and Knowles and later altered. It is located on an end-of-block site and stands at the corner of Faulkner Street and Nicholas Street. Constructed of brown brick in a Flemish bond, it features sandstone dressings and a slate roof. The building has a rectangular plan with a basement and four storeys, presenting five bays to Nicholas Street and three bays to Faulkner Street.
The design is in the Italianate style. The basement has been altered, and the ground floor is banded with a deep sill band and a Lombard frieze. Prominent giant pilasters rise up the upper floors, each adorned with enriched imposts and a bracketed cornice. The ground floor has wide, segmental-arched openings with brick detailing designed to look like splayed voussoirs. These openings contain coupled sash windows, with incised decoration within the tympani. The third bay on Faulkner Street has a tall doorway featuring a moulded surround, panelled double doors, and internal steps. The upper floors each have two sash windows per bay, with the topmost window being round-headed and the others segmental-headed, all featuring ornamented sills and heads. The building’s interior has not been inspected.
