Description

Oak Mount Mill Chimney is a cotton mill chimney built around 1870 to 1880. It is constructed from coursed dressed sandstone blocks and is designed in the "Candlestick" style. The chimney stands over 37 meters high with a tapering cylindrical shaft that features a bull-nosed cornice. It is set on a cubical pedestal made of rock-faced masonry, which has a smooth freestone frieze and a roll-moulded band. The upper stage of the chimney is octagonal in shape, adorned with broad lambs-tongue stops, and is finished with another roll-moulded band. This chimney is considered one of the finest surviving examples in the area and forms a group with the associated Engine House.
