Description

The Former Billiards Hall is a building located on Trafalgar Street in Burnley, constructed in 1910. It was designed by the architect Samuel Keighley for Willie Holt, a billiard table manufacturer from Accrington Road, Burnley. The structure is made of millstone grit ashlar and features a stone slab roof. It has a rectangular plan and consists of two storeys, with the billiard room situated on the upper level.

The principal elevation facing Trafalgar Street has five bays. The eaves are deeply overhanging and supported by paired shaped brackets. On the first floor, each bay contains three slit windows, with the taller windows on the right providing light to the stairs; these windows have leaded panes. The ground floor features paired windows with renewed casements beneath a bold cornice that returns to the right, interrupted by large and unusual consoles over pilasters that define the bays. An entrance is located at the corner to the right, which is canted and rusticated at the ground level, flanked by single-light windows.

The gable end elevation on Cranmer Street has coping and kneelers, with an apex ventilator and three plat bands, along with single-light windows on both floors. The rear elevation has similar fenestration to the front, although the windows are boarded and treated plainly. There is a brick stack on the rear roof slope. The interior was not inspected. This building is noted for its distinctive design by a lesser-known local architect and is recognized as a good and early example of a specialized games hall.
