Description
The Church of the Holy Trinity is a church built between 1835 and 1836 by Lewis Vulliamy for the Church Commissioners. It was enlarged in the late 19th century and became derelict in 1991 due to fire damage. The building was restored and converted into flats in 1993. It is constructed of punch-dressed sandstone ashlar with a slate roof, now featuring skylight windows, and is designed in the Early English style.
The church has a nave with a west tower, a chancel with a north chapel, and a south vestry. The three-stage tower includes clasping buttresses, offset bands between the stages, and an embattled parapet with octagonal corner pinnacles. It features paired two-centred arched west doorways set in a two-centred blank arch, a clock face at the second stage with a diamond-shaped surround, and coupled lancet belfry windows with louvres.
The wide, unaisled four-bay nave has a chamfered plinth, angle buttresses with tall pinnacles, simple buttresses between the bays with two offsets, and a corbel table to each bay. The tall coupled lancet windows have deep splayed reveals, although only remnants of stained glass remain. The chancel consists of two short bays with coupled lancets on the sides and an east window featuring three stepped lancet lights in a two-centred blank arch. On the north side, there is a gabled chapel with a circular window, though the tracery has been destroyed.
The interior has been remodelled but previously included a three-sided gallery supported by cast-iron columns and an open-timbered roof.
