Description

Nos. 78-84 on Yorkshire Street in Burnley is a terrace of four townhouses, built around 1848-1850, which have since been converted into two surgeries and one club. The buildings are constructed from chisel-dressed sandstone ashlar and topped with a slate roof, showcasing a simplified classical style.

The terrace features a double-depth plan, with each house being single-fronted and having individual back extensions. They rise three storeys above cellars and have a symmetrical arrangement of windows: two sets of two windows for each house, totaling eight windows across the terrace. The design includes a chamfered plinth, continuous sill bands on two levels, a plain frieze, and a moulded gutter cornice.

Each house has its doorway located to the right, framed by pilaster jambs, a moulded impost, and a floating cornice. The doorway for No. 80 features a panelled door, while No. 82 has been altered to include a window, and the others have modified doors. The windows are adorned with moulded architraves; those on the ground floor are segmental-headed with shouldered architraves. No. 80 has 4-pane sashes, while the other houses have altered glazing. The terrace is capped with three corniced chimneys on the ridge, with a fourth chimney that has been altered.

At the rear, Nos. 78 and 80 have full-height back extensions, and No. 80 features 16-pane sashed windows. The terrace forms a group with Nos. 66-76 to the left. The interior has not been inspected.
