Description

The milestone inset into the Turf Moor Football Ground perimeter wall in Burnley dates from around 1759 to 1760. It was created for the Turnpike Trust established by an Act of Parliament in 1759 to improve the road from Burnley to Todmorden and Halifax. This sandstone monolith measures approximately 0.5 meters wide and 1.5 meters high, featuring an ogival head. The face of the milestone is now very worn, making the inscription largely illegible, but the words "TO / TODMORDEN" can still be seen near the top. Originally, it indicated that Todmorden was 9 miles away and Burnley was a quarter of a mile away.
