Description

Hand Bridge is a public road bridge over the River Calder, likely constructed when Todmorden Road was turnpiked in 1817, although it has the date "1866" inscribed on the east side. The bridge was widened on the west side in the 20th century. The east side features a very low semi-elliptical arch with rusticated run-out voussoirs, which are decorated with a unique and creative form of vermiculation that includes primitive foliation and faces, along with the date "1866" positioned low on the left. Additional features include a plain band, a parapet with rounded coping, a rectangular terminal pier to the south, and a 7-meter continuation south of this that incorporates a stone baffle gateway, which is damaged.
