Description

No. 71 Todmorden Road is a villa that was later used as an education centre. It dates from the early to mid 19th century and has been altered over time. The building is constructed from chisel-dressed squared sandstone and features slate roofs across two levels.

The villa has an L-shaped plan, consisting of a double-depth, double-fronted main block with a double-pile service wing attached at the rear right-hand corner. The main range is two storeys high and has three symmetrical windows. It includes a plinth, raised quoins, a moulded gutter cornice, and coped gables. The central doorway is framed by engaged Tuscan columns and features a plain frieze and moulded cornice, with a panelled door and overlight. The windows are four-pane unhorned sashes with plain surrounds, and there are gable chimneys. Notably, the right-hand gable wall has a tall round-headed stair window with Y-tracery.

The set-back service wing is two storeys tall and has a two-window front. It features a doorway on the left with a plain surround, a panelled door, and an overlight with diagonal glazing bars. Above this door is a 12-pane sashed window, along with a small window to the right of the door and one blind window on each floor to the right. The right-hand return side of the service wing has two gables and four windows. The rear of the main range has an unusual parapet with blind windows that suggest an attic storey.

Inside, the entrance hall and passage are floored with encaustic tiles in geometric patterns of buff, brown, blue, and white. The doglegged staircase features slender cast-iron balusters, although the rest of the interior has been altered. The building forms a group with Nos. 73 and 75 Todmorden Road.
