Description

No. 1 College Lawn is a villa that has been converted into an education centre, built between 1850 and 1860. The building features stucco over brick with a hipped slate roof and an iron balcony.

It stands three storeys high with a basement and has four first-floor windows. To the right, there is a two-storey, single-bay porch that is set back. The stucco detailing includes quoins at the corners of the main range and horizontal rustication on the ground floor. The entrance bay has a cornice with modillions, and there is a continuous moulded sill band on the first floor. The windows are framed with tooled architraves; those on the ground floor have ears and keystones, while the entrance features a tooled round arch with a keystone and imposts. The first-floor windows have cornices on acanthus brackets, except for the entrance, which has a round-arched surround. The second-floor windows have sills on feet. Most windows are 1/1 sashes, except for the first floor, which has 2/2 sashes, all set in plain reveals with blind boxes. The basement is concealed.

The entrance is accessed by a flight of roll-edged steps between low coped walls, leading to a part-glazed, three-panel door flanked by side-lights and topped with a divided overlight. The entrance bay is topped with a cornice, and the eaves are wide with modillions.

On the left side, the stucco detailing mirrors the front, featuring a ground-floor canted bay window with a modillion cornice (without keystones) and feet. The first and second floors have tripartite windows with sashes similar to those at the front.

The interior has not been inspected. A notable feature is the continuous balcony on the first floor, which has an ornate balustrade. This villa shares a similar design with Nos 2 and 5 College Lawn.
