Description

The General Hospital, specifically the central block, was built in 1848. The architect was DJ Humphris, and it cost approximately £2,000 to construct. It is built of rendered stone with a slate roof, featuring ashlar detailing and lateral stucco stacks. Iron railings are attached to the building. The design is in the Greek Revival style, forming an "E" shape.

The building has two storeys above a basement, with 11 first-floor windows arranged in a 2:2:3:2:2 pattern. A single-storey wing, also above a basement, extends to the right with a two-window range. The end wings project, each incorporating clasping full-height Doric pilasters. A central tetrastyle portico features giant fluted Ionic columns supporting a pediment and crowning entablature. The windows are 6/6 sash windows set in plain reveals with sills; those on the ground floor have tooled architraves and cornices. A concealed basement is present. A wide flight of steps leads to the central entrance, which features a two-panel door and a blind, panelled overlight within a tooled architrave and floating cornice.

The interior retains original features, including remnants of an open-well staircase with stick balusters and a mahogany handrail with a wreathed handrail. An entrance loggia contains two Ionic columns. A sculpture of The Good Samaritan by Holme Cardwell of Rome, dating from 1852, is located within the building. The remainder of the interior was not inspected.

The attached area railings feature an “X” motif.
