Description

This is a cast-iron pillar box dating from 1866 to 1877. Designed by JW Penfold and made by the Cochrane Grove Company of Dudley, it stands outside Hammond Court on College Lawn, Cheltenham. The pillar box is of a distinctive hexagonal “Penfold” type, featuring an elaborate crest decorated with leaves and the inscription “VR”. Cheltenham retains a notable group of these Victorian pillar boxes, with eight of the approximately 94 surviving examples found in the town, located on Bayshill Road, Duoro Road, Evesham Road, Lansdown Road, Montpellier Walk, Pittville Circus Road, and St Paul’s Road.
