Description

This is a terrace of fifteen houses, now used as houses and flats, dating from around 1820 to 1850. The terrace was built in two phases and has undergone later additions and alterations. The houses are constructed with stucco over ashlar to numbers 70 to 90, and stucco over brick otherwise. The roofs are slate, with some original sections, and the party walls have stuccoed brick stacks. Iron balconies are also present.

The houses on the left have three storeys and one or two first-floor windows each. The right-hand houses, numbers 88 and 90, are taller. Numbers 70 to 90 have a prominent first-floor band. The original windows were mostly 8/8, 6/6, or 2/2 pane sashes, although some have been replaced with 2/2 sashes. Number 64 features 8-pane French doors on the first floor. All windows are set in plain reveals with sills. The original entrances were generally 4-panel doors with overlights; number 88 has a fanlight with a tooled surround. A similar entrance is found on the left return. The left return has three first-floor windows. The original details include a crowning band, a frieze, and a cornice, topped by a coped parapet that is ramped at number 88.

The interiors retain some original joinery and plasterwork. Number 64 has an ornate continuous first-floor balcony. The terrace is a good surviving example of an artisan terrace.
