Description

Numbers 109 to 123 form a terrace of eight houses built around 1820 to 1850. The houses are constructed of stucco over brick, with a slate roof and brick and stucco party-wall stacks. They are set on a double-depth plan, with full-height service ranges to the rear.

The houses are two storeys high with a basement, and feature 16 first-floor windows (two per house). Stucco detailing includes horizontal rustication to the ground floor, incorporated into voussoirs over wide, segmentally-arched plain recesses around the windows, and aprons with sunk panels and reeding. A moulded band runs across the first floor, surmounted by Doric pilasters to the ends of the terrace and paired Doric pilasters between the windows. There is a stepped architrave, a frieze, and a dentil cornice, culminating in a blocking course. The first-floor windows are mostly 6/6 sashes, with some wider windows to the ground floor that include margin lights. Basement windows are also 6/6 sashes where original.

The entrances are on the right-hand side, with flights of steps leading to four-panel doors, some of which are part-glazed, with overlights featuring margin glazing. The interior has not been inspected.

Subsidiary features include iron porches to numbers 121 and 123, featuring slender pillars and a scrolled frieze. Railings with bars and dog-bars flank the steps on the right side; X-motif balustrades are on the left side. A length of railings, approximately 3 metres long, is attached to the left of the terrace and features spearhead bars and dog-bars with anthemion-headed finials to the stanchions. The railings to the sides of the steps add to the group value of the terrace.
