Description
The terrace at 54-60 Winchcombe Street comprises four houses built around 1820-1830. They have been subsequently altered and are now used as shops and a disused garage. The houses are built with stucco over brick, with a concealed roof to the front and slate and artificial slate roofs to the rear. Party walls have renewed brick and stucco stacks, and there are iron balconies.
The three-story terrace, with a basement, has eight first-floor windows per house. Stucco detailing includes bands between floors, a crowning frieze, and a cornice. The first and second floors have 6/6 sashes, taller on the first floor, although some are now boarded. The right-hand side of the terrace has French windows to the first floor and 6/9 sashes to the second floor. The ground floor features elliptically arched windows, with original 1/1 tripartite sashes in most cases. One of the houses has a garage opening inserted. The entrances are round-arched and lead to six-panel doors, some of which are part-glazed with lattice friezes and original fanlights featuring circle and batwing glazing bars (particularly at No. 58). The rear of the property retains 6/6 and 2/2 horizontal-pane sashes. The interior has not been inspected. Individual balconies are embellished with decorative rods and lattice, along with semi-circular friezes.
