Description
The railings to Cheltenham College grounds, located on Sandford Road, date from around 1840 to 1860. They feature a stone plinth with alternating spearhead and fleurs-de-lys head iron railings. The standards are decorated with fleurs-de-lys and supported by dogleg stanchions. The railings extend approximately 230 meters along Sandford Road, about 160 meters to College Lawn, and around 45 meters to Thirlestaine Road. The double gates and pedestrian gate on Sandford Road have arrowhead bars. These railings are an important streetscape feature and contribute to the setting of Cheltenham College, Bath Road. They connect seamlessly with the Cheltenham College Gymnasium, Pavilion, Fives Courts, and their attached railings on Thirlestaine Road.
