Description

A terrace of fourteen houses built around 1810 to 1835, standing above the road in Ilfracombe. The houses are constructed of stucco, with slate-hung returns to numbers 1 and 14. The four central houses are set forward slightly, and there are projecting houses at each end. The terrace is three storeys high, with attic storeys or dormers, originally all likely featuring dormers. Each house has two windows. The porches have fluted columns supporting a triglyph frieze and cornice; the projecting end houses and the four central houses have paired porches. The front doors are panelled and are topped with rectangular overlights to numbers 1 to 5 and 9 to 13 (with margin glazing), and fanlights to numbers 6, 7 and 8 and 14 (also with margin glazing). Internal fanlights and moulded surrounds are likely present in all houses, but are visible at numbers 2, 4, 5, 9 to 12 (with elliptical fanlights) and 14 (with an overlight). Continuous cast-iron balconies of varying designs and dates are found on the first floor of all the houses, with particularly good examples at numbers 2, 3, 5, 6 and 14. Number 1 originally had a trellis canopy. The majority of the houses retain their original, slightly recessed, hornless sash windows on the upper floors; number 3 has first-floor casements, number 6 has first-floor casements, and number 6’s second floor has twentieth-century glazing. The terrace includes parapets. The interior was not inspected. The terrace is a prominent feature on the hillside, particularly when viewed from the harbour.
